MELILLA, ONE YEAR AFTER THE MASSACRE
June 24, 2023 – Melilla, Spain
On June 24, 2022, around 2,000 people attempted to cross the border between Spain and Morocco, at the Barrio Chino border crossing point, in Melilla. After the intervention of police forces on both sides of the border, at least 37 people died and the estimated number of missing people is at least 76. Hundreds of people were pushed back and others were left injured for hours without receiving any medical care.
One year later, dozens of bodies remain unidentified in the morgue and the families keep searching for their missing relatives. Activists and organizations demonstrated in Melilla claiming for justice and reparation for the victims.
What happened in Melilla on June 24, 2022, was not a tragedy; it was the largest massacre recorded at a European land border until the date.
